Build a house, plant a tree, 1980

Synopsis

This tragi-comedy shows the two sides of human morality under the socialist system. The film ends unexpectedly in a tragedy surrounding the main character. The young Matúš is in love with the local beauty Helena, a single mother, and has decided to risk fulfilling his dream of having his own house and a happy family. He wants to have everything at once -a house, a tree and also a son, but how can he do that without stealing? His resolution: exploiting the gaps in the socialist system.

J.Jakubisko: “After 9 years of a forced break I was offered a terrible script about a positive socialist hero. I knew that I couldn’t say no. I changed the script and made a film that brought me more trouble instead of pardon. Maybe because I used the well-known practice of the socialist country: He who is not stealing from the government is stealing from his own family.”
